ELITE ASSOCIATES - “LOSE BRAIDS OR LOSE JOB”
Monday 23rd March 2015

Popular blogger and hair model Simone Powderly said she has been a victim of discrimination when Luxury sales recruitment agency told her to remove her braids because they were deemed as ‘unnatural’ and it would risk her getting the job.

She told The Voice: “I was told I was successful in my group assessment but what was said next I didn’t expect. I was asked: ‘Can we ask you to take your hair out in time for the interview…high-end brands like a more natural look?’”

As readers we can appreciate how Ms Powderly felt during her interview process. Elite Associates are known for representing and providing a competitive recruitment agency in the luxury industry, providing the highest calibre of candidates to the most selective and prestigious retailers and brands in the world. Luxury brands commonly known for their well-groomed staff is an extremely competitive industry. However many brands, including Elite Associates supposedly believe in equal opportunities and welcome people from multiple cultures and backgrounds.

Evidently this wasn’t the case with Simone Powederly’s interviews, blogger and model from South London explained “I couldn’t decide what to do; if I took them out then I wasn’t standing up for equal rights and basically saying it’s OK to discriminate against me.”

Ahead of the scheduled second interview, Powderly sent several emails explaining that she was uncomfortable with the request but still wanted to attend the interview and would be doing so with her braids firmly in place.

Not surprised by the recruiter’s rejection, Simone reached out to the company for feedback on her performance and received no reply. She then decided to call. She told the receptionist that she wanted to submit a complaint to the manager, but nobody responded until recently.

Ms Powderly said her natural locks were inspired by Zendaya Colemen, who also recently was discriminated on live television about her dread locks that she modelled at the Oscars Red Carpet 2015.
