IVORIAN FORMER FIRST LADY JAILED

Simone Gbagbo, Former First Lady of Ivory Coast has been jailed for her part taken in the violence that followed the 2010 elections.

More than 3, 000 people died in the violent outbreak that took place after the presidential poll because the ex-leader refused to accept defeat to Alassane Ouattara.

Simone and her husband Laurent Gbagbo (former Ivorian President) were arrested in 2011 after troops stormed bunker where the couple had taken refuge in Abidjan. Now, 4 years later the former president is awaiting trial at the International Court (ICC).

Simone, a powerful politician in her own rights has been sentenced to 20 years. Initially 10 years but this was the charge only for disturbing public order. The final 20-year sentence is for undermining state security.
